Seasonal Clothing Swaps: Sweaters Out, Sandals Stored

Spring and Summer clothing swapped in place of Fall and Winter clothing

Hello friend,

Good day to you. Today, I want to talk about something that happens every single year, but that we often make harder than it needs to be. Seasonal clothing swaps.

Right now, wherever you are, you're probably looking at a closet that's holding onto clothes from the wrong season. Maybe it's still winter where you are and your spring sandals are taking up precious real estate. Maybe summer just ended and you're staring at sundresses you won't wear again for months. This is visual clutter and it's doing something to your brain. It's adding weight to your space when you're already carrying so much.

Here's the thing about seasonal depression: it makes everything feel heavier. Heavier to see. Heavier to manage. So, why are you looking at a closet full of season inappropriate clothes every single day?

In the fall, when temperature drops, pull out your sweaters: your long sleeves, your layers. Enjoy having them right there, easy to reach. Then pack away the lightweight, summary things: your tank tops, your sandals, your linen pants. Put them somewhere safe, but out of sight. If you have under the bed storage containers, they work beautifully. A shelf in your closet that you don't see when you open the door omits visuals you don't need to see right now. A bin in a spare room works great if it's available. Choose somewhere where your clothing is protected, but they're not staring at you.

In spring, reverse this procedure. Take out the sandals and the lightweight pieces. Take out the things that let your skin breathe. And, away goes the heavier knitwear.

When you remove season inappropriate clothing from your view, you're not just organizing. You're essentially giving yourself permission to have a smaller and simpler world for a moment. You're saying to yourself "right now, in this season of my life, these are the clothes that matter. This is what I'm working with." That's actually profound!

And here's a bonus: when you do this rotation, you're forced to touch every single piece. You get to remember what you actually own. Sometimes I'll pull out a sweater I forgot about and suddenly I have something new to me to wear. Sometimes I realize I haven't worn something in two years and it becomes a donation item. That's helpful information, especially when we want to open up space emotionally and visually.

This actual step doesn't have to take long. You don't need a whole project day. You can do this one drawer at a time, one shelf at a time. Maybe this week you rotate your tops. Next week you can tackle your bottoms. Spread it out. One small step at a time.

When you're done, stand in front of your closet and breathe. You've just created a space that makes sense for where you actually are. That's an act of kindness toward yourself. Your brain will feel that shift, even if you can't quite name it.

I hope you found this encouraging today. There is something that feels very cathartic when I swap out seasonal clothing. It feels fresh and helps to look forward to some old favorites that make me feel good to wear.

Have a wonderful week...until next time, Jeanine
