Good day to you,
I want to ask you something that might sound odd, but I promise it matters: where is your bed right now, and why is it there?
I’m not asking you to change anything yet. Not yet. For now, I’m just asking you to notice.
Most of us place our bed where it “fits”. It goes against the wall that makes sense logistically. Maybe it’s where the previous resident had it, or where it fit when you first set it up, or where there’s just enough room. We don’t usually make an intentional choice about placement. We make a practical one.
But here’s what I’ve learned from working with women who struggle with seasonal depression. Where your bed sits has a profound effect on how your bedroom feels and functions. Your bed is the biggest piece of furniture in your room, and it’s placement sets the entire tone.
Right now, before you think about rearranging, I want you to really see where it is. Walk into your bedroom as if you’re seeing it for the first time. Stand in the doorway. What do you see? Does your bed dominate the room? Is it tucked away? Can you see the door from where you lie in bed? Is there space to walk around it, or does it feel cramped? Do you receive the first rays of morning light coming through the window from where your bed is right now?
Notice how you feel in the space. Does it feel welcoming when you enter? Does your bed look like a place of rest, or does it feel like an obstacle you’ve arranged your life around?
This isn’t about judgment. Many of us find ourselves in rooms that weren’t designed with us in mind. Maybe the bed is too big for the space. Maybe it’s positioned so the window light never reaches it. Maybe you’ve had to make do with what worked at the time. Or, if you are like me, my bedroom is small and the bed can only be placed in one spot/one way.
But you’re here now, reading this, because you’re ready to think about your bedroom differently. And, that starts with simply seeing what’s actually there. No pressure to change anything yet. Just notice for now. That awareness is where every good change begins.
One of my previous blog posts focused on directional sunlight. Taking in consideration where you get your sunlight in your master bedroom relates to where your bed is (or should be) positioned. How much light you get or don’t get matters because you want to get the most morning light you can during your season. However, as I mentioned above, you may not have a choice. The purpose of having you just take a look at where your bed is positioned with regard to where the sunlight comes through is what I would like you to be aware of today. We will address how you can take practical steps to make changes in Blog 3 (scheduled for 12 October, 2026) of this topic.
I hope you feel encouraged today. Have a wonderful day! Jeanine
